Carole Cadwalladr - How to survive the Broligarchy @ St Martin in the Fields

I recently attended a talk by Carole Cadwalladr at St Martin-in-the-Fields titled “How to Survive the Broligarchy.” It was held in an interview format, chaired by Peter Florence, and it was quite incredible the range of issues and stories that were discussed.

One of the main topics discussed was the Cambridge Analytica investigation from Carole Cadwalladr herself, having been directly involved in uncovering it. Reading about events like this in the news is was one thing, but hearing the story from the journalist who actually worked on it gave a completely different perspective on how complex investigations like this unfold.

The conversation also touched on the term “Broligarchy,” which Cadwalladr coined. Having recently watched the Panorama episode “Tech Titans,” it was interesting to hear her explain the idea in more depth connecting it to very current news events and happenings.

After the "The Conversation", me and other members of the audience asked questions in the Q & A. People raised different viewpoints and concerns. And through all this what really stood out was her bravery. Her bravery to sacrifice so much of her peace in order to do what she felt was right - It was truly inspiring.

I had seen Carole Cadwalladr’s TED talk “Facebook’s Role in Brexit — and the Threat to Democracy” before, which played a major role in bringing attention to these issues. But seeing her in person in "The Conversation" really unveiled the extent of courage and resilience that goes behind making a change in the world.
